The job placement with the band PaperSailor has been an edifying experience, offering invaluable insights into the independent music industry and providing opportunities for personal and professional growth. Initially, I was seeking a placement with an established Italian solo artist, aiming to engage with the mainstream Italian music scene and gain hands-on experience. However, unforeseen circumstances, including family illness and the COVID-19 pandemic, led me to shadow Michael from PaperSailor, a local independent band, instead. Despite those challenges, I adapted quickly and embraced the experience enthusiastically. Throughout the placement, I assisted Michael with various tasks, including setting-up guitars, editing backing tracks, and supervising his calendar. Witnessing Michael’s passion for his music, his dedication to his craft and observing the intricacies of live gig bookings provided me with a deeper understanding of the local scene. Furthermore, working with a band helped me understand the social dynamics of a working group. Additionally, unexpectedly becoming the lead guitarist for PaperSailor, highlighted the importance of adaptability and how often challenges can be turned into opportunities if keeping the right mindset.
